CAEL Board of Trustees Adds Six Members

The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) has announced that its board of trustees has six new members.

It has electing to the board Chris Bustamante, president, Rio Salado College; John C. Cavanaugh, chancellor of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education; Vicki Garcia, vice president of human resources at Roswell Park Cancer Institute; William J. McKinney, president of Valdosta State University; Elsa M. Nunez, president of Eastern Connecticut State University; and Michael A. Wright, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Covanta Holding Corp.

CAEL links learning and work. It works within the higher education, public and private sectors, with the mission to make it easier for people to get education and training to attain meaningful and secure employment.

Bustamante’s college has the largest in headcount of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges located in metropolitan Phoenix, and is the largest public online community college in the nation. It serves about 70,000 students annually, including more than 43,000 online students.

Cavanaugh is the CEO of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, which operates 14 comprehensive universities with a combined enrollment of roughly 120,000 students. While at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, Cavanaugh helped create the Academic Technology Center and was an advocate of the Vince Whibbs Community Maritime Park, the largest public-private partnership in Pensacola.

Garcia is a 28-year employee of Roswell Park Cancer Institute. He previously served as director of employment, holding oversight responsibility for HRIS and diversity.

McKinney is the president of Valdosta State University (VSU), recipient of this year’s CAEL Institutional Service Award. Prior to arriving at VSU, McKinney served as vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of philosophy at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Nunez is in her seventh year as president of Eastern Connecticut State University. She came to the university with more than 20 years of experience as a senior administrator at such institutions as the University of Maine System and City University of New York.

Wright is a senior human resources executive with a background in operations and administration. At Covanta Holding Corp., he is responsible for leading the human resources team on a global basis in the areas of strategy and programs, labor relations, compensation, benefits and talent management.
