Producing Innovation in Your Organization

Monday, March 12, 2007 - Wednesday, March 14, 2007

March 12th

9:00am - 6:00pm - Registration
Conference Center Lobby
1:30pm - 2:30pm - Keynote Address – Transforming the Learning Function for the World’s Largest Retailer
Grand Ballroom D-G

Because of its massive scale and ubiquity, pundits have dubbed the Bentonville, Arkansas retailer the “Republic of Wal-Mart.” When you reference the numbers behind the company – for example, a U.S. workforce that numbers more than the total population of 75 nations (1.3 million) or 8,000 units worldwide – this characterization begins to seem plausible. The sheer enormity of the organization dictates that almost every function within the company, including learning and development, be similarly large in scale and scope. In this engaging multimedia presentation, Wal-Mart Vice President of Talent Planning and Development John DiBenedetto relates his experiences as change leader for a complete transformation of the retailer’s learning and development strategy, processes, platforms and deliverables, and discusses the impact this evolution is having on the world’s largest retailer.

Grand Ballroom D-G

In times past, chief learning officers often viewed demonstrations of their programs’ effectiveness as something on the order of alchemy, converting metrics into positive organizational impact like so much lead into gold. Yet with the rise of innovative measurement methodologies that can viably connect employee education to enterprise success, those days are coming to an end. Chief Learning Officer magazine has assembled a panel of experts who will explain how you can bring your organization out of the dark ages of unproductive assessments.

4:00pm - 5:00pm - Leveraging Conflict and Relationships to Drive Innovation
Shoreline

Organizational innovation happens when individuals, leaders, teams and different functions collide constructively. Conflict becomes the crucible in which different perspectives are converted into creative solutions. Too often, however, conflict explodes destructively and derails collaboration, or the desire to avoid conflict leads individuals and teams to avoid engaging their differences, and even one another, altogether. In this session, Jonathan Hughes, co-author of the Harvard Business Review article, “Want Collaboration? Invite and Manage Conflict,” will explore the connections among innovation, conflict management and relationship management, as well as the strategic role of the learning organization in enabling innovation by introducing, supporting and rewarding key behavioral drivers of innovation.

RWD and Cox Newspapers Inc. will discuss how organizations that seek to capture, share and retain knowledge to optimize employee performance and productivity can reach their goals. Today’s business realities require you continually focus on performance — for both the business and employees. Success often depends on employees’ abilities to adapt, learn and retain knowledge, as well as competencies to do their jobs most effectively. Because 80 percent of what we learn is learned on the job, it is critical to enable employees to build their own knowledge and skills by interacting with their environment and address informal learning requirements.

Great leadership is oftentimes less about the decisions made by people in charge and more about the feelings they inspire in the people they lead. The qualities of superlative leadership will be further explored and explained in the keynote address of Surinder Kumar, Chief Innovation Officer for Wrigley and author of “Riding the Blue Train: A Leadership Plan for Explosive Growth.”

Salon ABC

Don Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels model of evaluation has stood the test of time for evaluating courses and programs for more than 50 years. Little, however, has been written or spoken about using the model for strategic evaluation — until now. Using return on expectations as the key concept, Jim Kirkpatrick, Ph.D., will tell you how to use the four levels (reaction, learning, behavior and results) to make evaluation do more than you ever thought possible. Specifically, you will learn how to use the model to closely align your learning strategy with the goals of your organization, use the missing link — Level 3 — to reinforce mission-critical behaviors and execute strategy and develop a compelling trail of evidence to demonstrate the value of your entire learning function to the bottom line. Finally, see how the three D’s of strategic evaluation (discovery of, delivering on and demonstrating the contribution to stakeholder expectations) work to bring about exceptional learning value.

American Express looked at Web-based, instructor-led and blended approaches, and what it found was surprising: Not only was American Express able to prove one approach provided vastly better ROI, it was able to isolate and confirm how the best approach actually delivered the results. This workshop will focus on the study methodology, the company’s findings and how you can use its approach to increase learning ROI in your organization.
